Hello to the HMI BC team,
Pastor Sid & Brenda Anna & Abram Ypma
Well, fall is definitely here and we are well into hockey season. That means that chapels are taking place all over the province. I am encouraged, and glad to let you know that Hockey Ministry is moving ahead. Here are just a few snapshots of some of the action from this past month.
Jim and Marci Falconer
The first few days of October saw me travel to Vancouver and take two ferries to Powell River. I had a wonderful visit with Steve and Marie Boettger there. Steve is the chaplain for the Powell River Kings Junior A club. He really is doing a good job with the Kings. From Powell River, another ferry sailing took me to Comox/Courtenay on Vancouver Island. I met with good friend Tony Janzen, who is a youth pastor there. I will be going back to Comox in November to meet with the Junior B club there regarding a potential chaplaincy program. I then drove to Port Alberni, where I stayed with Sid and Brenda Ypma. Sid is the Chaplain of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Junior A club. After presenting HMI at his church, and visiting with wonderful friends Jim and Marci Falconer, I headed for Nanaimo. There I met with Dan Cousins, chaplain for the Nanaimo Clippers Junior A club and Jamie Penner, his assistant chaplain. The chapel program in Nanaimo is growing so well. We give thanks to the Lord for His mercy to all of our HMI BC chaplains for their perseverance. From Nanaimo, I traveled to Sidney where I met Colin Montgomery, the new chaplain for the Peninsula Panthers Junior B club.
Colin and I met with the GM and Coach of the Panthers and this brand new chapel program was established. Finally, I returned home, tired, fulfilled and content..
Shawn Barden and Dan McSkimming
At home, I had a wonderful chapel with the my Westside Warriors Junior A club, with 23 players choosing to attend. (That is everyone!) We had prayer requests about real serious issues, and many coffee appointments are still following.... At a Warriors game a few days later, two fans came to me about their own heartaches and issues. I am following up on these people as well. Ministry is about Jesus and people ---they go hand in hand.
Michael Hayes and Paul Truman
Toward the end of the month, I drove to Nelson to meet Cam McFadyen, chaplain for the Nelson Leafs Junior B club. Cam and I went down to the arena and met the Coaches for the Leafs. "Showing up" is so, so important in this or any ministry. I call it the 'ministry of presence.' I am thankful to Cam and Corrine for their hospitality in taking me in for the night. From Nelson, I drove to Fernie, and met with Dan McSkimming and Shawn Barden, making initial plans to approach the Coach and GM of the Fernie Ghostriders Junior B club regarding a new chapel program. Please pray with us about this new initiative. After Fernie, I traveled to Cranbrook to meet with Michael Hayes, Paul Reimer and Paul Truman. Michael and Paul R. are chaplains for the WHL's Kootenay Ice, and Paul T. is considering taking the chaplaincy for the Kimberley Dynamiters Junior B club. As soon as the meeting was over, I drove from Cranbrook back to Kelowna... again tired and content.
Colin Montgomery
I am so glad for you support. and thankful. Without your part, in prayer and finances, I could not do any of this. There are young lives being touched and reached through HMI BC chaplaincy programs and faithful chaplains all over the province. Thank you, thank you,
Jamie Penner and Dan Cousins
