Counselling Approaches

Person-Centered

Person-Centered Therapy deals with the ways in which people perceive themselves consciously rather than having a therapist try to interpret unconscious thoughts or ideas. The premise is that the client already has the answers to the problems and the job of the therapist is to listen without making any judgements, without giving advice, and simply follow the client as they explore themselves, their situation, their journey and their feelings.

Emotion Focused

Emotion Focused Therapy proposes that emotions themselves have an innately adaptive potential that, if activated, can help clients change problematic emotional states or unwanted self-experiences. Emotion Focused Therapy is an approach to treatment that focuses on the transformation of emotion. Emotions are believed to be the key to produce long-lasting therapeutic change in a person. Clients undergoing Emotion Focused Therapy are helped to better identify, experience, explore, make sense of, transform and flexibly manage their emotional experiences.

Cognitive Behaviour

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy recognizes the important link between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Therapists work with clients to identify unhelpful automatic thoughts and personal beliefs that are getting in the way of living life. These thoughts are evaluated and potentially replaced with more realistic and helpful ways of thinking. The therapist and client also work to identify specific, concrete and manageable behavioral goals to help manage mood. Changing thoughts and behaviors should ultimately lead to changes in feelings.

F. A. Q.

Q – How do I know if I need counselling?

A – Counselling provides a safe place to talk.  It is a time to look at rational and emotional and behavioural ways to manage the pain inside, discover new behaviours, work on steps to recovery, manage conflicted relationships, manage anger or continue with support on your journey of vulnerability and emotional health.

Q – What if I am not a member of Evangel Church?

A – This service is available to anyone who asks.  It does not matter if you are a member of this church or any church.

Q – What if I am unable to attend my appointment?

A – Please call the ministry assistant ASAP.

Q – Can I donate using a credit card?

A – Yes

Q – Who will see my file?

A – All files are kept in a locked cabinet.  Your counsellor, the supervisor and the ministry assistant are the only ones with access to your records.  You may request copies of your file notes at any time.
